Power Outage
- Do not use elevators. Facilities will post signs on the elevator requesting people not to use the elevator.
- Emergency lights should activate on each floor.
- Use a flashlight or light on your phone to exit the building.
- Standby for emergency notifications.
Downed Power Line
Don’t go near a downed power line. It can kill you. Always assume that a downed power line is live. Follow these guidelines:
- Don’t touch the downed power line with your hand or any object.
- Don’t touch anything in contact with a downed power line, including a vehicle or person.
- Don’t drive over a downed power line.
Stay safe if a downed power line touches your vehicle:
- Stay inside your vehicle. Do NOT exit the vehicle. The ground around your vehicle may be energized.
- Call 911 from your vehicle, if possible.
- Sound the horn. Roll down your window. Yell for help.
- Warn others to stay away. Anyone who touches the power equipment or ground around your vehicle can be injured.
- Wait until a firefighter, police officer or PG&E worker tells you it’s safe before exiting your vehicle.
If your vehicle is in contact with a downed power line and a fire starts, exit the vehicle:
- First, remove loose items of clothing.
- Hands at your sides, jump clear of the vehicle. Make sure you are not touching the vehicle when your feet hit the ground.
- Once clear of the vehicle, keep your feet close together. Shuffle away from the vehicle without losing contact with the ground.
Do not use Mylar® balloons and toys near power lines.
- Mylar balloons, also called foil balloons, are made from plastic nylon sheets with a metallic coating. They cause thousands of power outages every year when they come into contact with power lines or circuit breakers.
- Report issues to PG&E 800-743-5000.
- Do not use Mylar balloons, kites or remote-control toys near overhead power lines. If you must use Mylar balloons, then tie them down.
Look up and live.
- Be aware of power lines above when lifting a ladder or long-handled tool.
- Avoid fallen or dangling power lines. Do not touch the lines. Call 911.
- Do you see tree branches on power lines? Call PG&E at 800-743-5000.
Gas Leak
Signs of a possible natural gas leak include:
- Sulfur-like or rotten egg smell
- Hissing, whistling or roaring sounds
- Damaged connections to gas appliances
- Dead or dying vegetation, in otherwise moist areas, over or near pipeline areas
- Unusual soil movement or bubbling water
If you notice any of the above conditions, leave the area immediately.
Elevator Failure
If you are in a malfunctioning elevator car:
- Remain calm.
- NEVER attempt to leave the elevator if it is stuck between floors or has partially opened doors as this can result in serious injury or death.
- Make sure the emergency stop switch is not engaged.
- Use the elevator phone to contact UPD (on campus) or building management (off campus).
