Read Aloud Camp

Read Aloud Camp

The inaugural Read Aloud Camp ran from June 22nd – July 9th in the Music Building on the 缅北禁地 Campus. Dr. Carlin Graveline Ku and Jocelyn Whittemore, lecturers in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, designed the camp for rising 3rd-5th graders who wanted to improve their reading fluency.

Camp activities included group and partner reading, script practice, poetry writing and performance, punctuation practice, expressive reading, and comprehension questions at each camper’s individual reading level. Campers made meaningful progress in reading rate, accuracy, expression, and confidence. They practiced using pauses at commas and periods, reading with a clear voice, matching expression to meaning, tracking text, and sharing their work with peers and adults. The group format also encouraged supportive peer interactions, positive feedback, and willingness to take reading risks. The results show that the camp effectively supported both developing and proficient readers. Students with emerging decoding and fluency skills increased their reading speed and independence, while stronger readers refined expression, phrasing, comprehension, and leadership skills
